Airalo eSIM India Travel Checklist: Plans, Setup & Arrival
Last updated: 5 November 2026
Does Airalo work in India? Short answer
Yes. Airalo’s India eSIM works on partner networks in India — currently listed with VI India as the primary network — and is data-only. You keep your home SIM for WhatsApp calls and SMS if your phone supports dual-SIM. Plan sizes, day lengths and prices change, so check the live India page on Airalo (airalo.com/india-esim) before you buy rather than relying on a screenshot from last month. Packages typically include unlimited options for 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 30 days, plus fixed-data options; always confirm what your specific package includes.
This checklist is for travellers from the Gulf and elsewhere who want mobile data on arrival without standing in an airport SIM queue. It covers what to do before the flight, how install differs from activation, what to tap at the Indian airport, how much data common apps use, and the fixes that actually clear “signal but no internet” problems. For the promo codes AF18 and EF18, see the save box near the end and our Airalo discount code page.
Pre-travel checklist for Airalo in India
Do these at home on Wi-Fi. None of them require you to be in India yet, and most connection failures after landing come from skipping one of them.
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone compatibility | Settings search for “eSIM” or “Add eSIM”; Airalo’s device list is a second reference | An eSIM-only plan is useless on a phone that can’t install one |
| Carrier unlock | Ask your home operator if the phone is unlocked for other networks | A locked phone often installs the eSIM but never registers abroad |
| Free eSIM slot | iPhone: Cellular → see how many eSIM lines; Android: SIM manager | Some phones hold one eSIM; others hold several. Free a slot if needed |
| Plan validity start rule | In package details, find Validity Policy | Most plans start when you connect in India; a few start on install — don’t install early if yours is the latter |
| Offline downloads | Google Maps offline areas for cities you’ll visit; screenshot Airalo How to connect (APN, roaming, networks) | You may have no data the first minutes after landing |
| Dual-SIM setup plan | Decide: home SIM for calls/WhatsApp number, Airalo for Cellular Data | Stops the phone from using expensive home roaming by mistake |
Buy the India package when you’re ready, then install only after you’ve read the validity policy. Labels help: name the line something like “India data” so you don’t toggle the wrong SIM at immigration.
Install vs activate: timing for India trips
Install downloads the eSIM profile to your phone. Activate, for most Airalo packages, happens when that eSIM first connects to a supported network inside its coverage area — for an India plan, that means in India. Buying alone never starts the clock.
- 1–2 days before departure (connect-on-arrival plans): install over stable Wi-Fi with any VPN off. Leave the eSIM line off or keep airplane mode habits clear so it doesn’t try to roam at home.
- If Validity Policy says “starts upon installation”: wait and install on arrival day, preferably on airport Wi-Fi before you need maps.
- On the plane: use airplane mode. After landing, enable the eSIM for data before you disable airplane mode (details in the arrival section below).
The full buy → install → activate timeline, including how to read Validity Policy and recycling deadlines, is in our guide on when to activate an Airalo eSIM. India packages follow the same rules as other country eSIMs; only the coverage country changes.
Arrival steps at an Indian airport
You want data before you leave the terminal for a taxi or metro. Work through this order; it usually takes a few minutes once you have signal.
- Keep airplane mode on until the eSIM line is ready, so the phone doesn’t briefly roam on your home SIM.
- Turn on the Airalo line and select it for mobile / cellular data. On iPhone you can leave the home line on for calls and iMessage while data uses Airalo; turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so the phone doesn’t fall back to home data.
- Enable data roaming on the eSIM if the Airalo How to connect screen asks for it. Prepaid Airalo data doesn’t add roaming fees from Airalo; the risk is home-carrier roaming if the wrong SIM is used for data.
- Turn airplane mode off and wait for a network name (often related to the partner listed in the app — for India packages, VI India is commonly shown as the primary network). Give it a couple of minutes.
- If there’s signal but no internet, open the app instructions again. Enter any listed APN exactly (often needed more on Android than iPhone), or pick a supported network manually. Step-by-step APN paths for iPhone and Samsung are in our Airalo APN settings guide.
- Test with a lightweight page (maps search, WhatsApp send). Then disable home-SIM data roaming if your phone allows per-SIM control.
Don’t delete the eSIM to “reset” it. Airalo eSIMs typically cannot be reinstalled after removal. Turn the line off if you need to pause; the validity clock still runs once it has started.
How much data do you need in India?
Usage varies with video quality and hotspot sharing. These ballpark figures help you choose between a smaller fixed plan and an unlimited day package — again, check live sizes on Airalo’s India page.
| Use | Rough daily use | Notes for India trips |
|---|---|---|
| Maps + navigation | 50–150 MB / day with offline maps cached | Download city areas before you fly; live traffic still uses some data |
| Chat (WhatsApp / Telegram text + light photos) | 30–100 MB / day | Voice notes and HD photo sends push this up |
| Social scrolling | 200–500+ MB / day | Auto-play video is the main drain |
| Video calls / streaming | 500 MB–2 GB / hour depending on quality | Prefer Wi-Fi in hotels when you can |
| Personal hotspot | Whatever the laptop or tablet pulls | Only if your package terms allow tethering; check the plan details |
A short city break with maps and chat often fits a modest fixed-data plan. Heavy Instagram or hotspotting a laptop for work is when travellers lean toward unlimited day packages — if those are still listed for India when you buy. Top-ups exist in the app if you underestimate; buying a second full eSIM is usually the slower path.
Dual-SIM setup: home number + India data
Airalo India plans are data-only. You will not get a new Indian phone number for voice. That is fine for most Gulf travellers who already use WhatsApp on their home number.
iPhone
- Settings → Cellular → turn on both lines; label Airalo clearly.
- Set Cellular Data to the Airalo eSIM.
- Keep the home line for Default Voice (optional) and leave WhatsApp on your home number.
- Disable Allow Cellular Data Switching; turn data roaming off on the home line if you can.
Android (Samsung / Pixel-style)
- Settings → Connections → SIM manager (wording varies): enable both SIMs; set Mobile data to Airalo.
- Prefer calls/SMS on the home SIM if you still need them.
- On many Androids, data roaming is global — if you must enable it for Airalo, consider turning the home SIM off for data or disabling the primary SIM temporarily so the home carrier cannot bill roaming data.
- If the app lists an APN, add it under Access Point Names for the eSIM (see the APN guide linked above).

Frequently asked questions
Does Airalo work in India?
Yes. Airalo sells India eSIMs that connect through local partner networks (VI India is commonly listed as the primary network). Coverage and package details can change, so confirm on the live India plan page before purchase.
Is Airalo India data-only?
Yes. You get mobile data, not a local Indian number for traditional voice. Keep your home SIM or use WhatsApp/FaceTime over data for calls.
When should I install my Airalo India eSIM?
For most packages, install 1–2 days before you fly on Wi-Fi, then let it activate when it first connects in India. If the Validity Policy says validity starts on installation, install on arrival day instead. See our when-to-activate guide for the full policy wording.
Do I need to set an APN for Airalo in India?
Often the APN is automatic. If the Airalo app lists an APN under How to connect, enter it exactly — more commonly required on Android. Full steps: Airalo APN settings guide on this site.
Why do I have signal bars but no internet after landing?
Usually data roaming is off on the eSIM, the wrong line is selected for data, the APN is missing, or the phone chose an unsupported network. Fix those in order, restart, then try manual network selection.
Can I use hotspot with an Airalo India plan?
Only if that package’s terms allow tethering. Check the plan details in the app before you rely on sharing data with a laptop.
What Airalo promo codes work for India?
Try AF18 at checkout; if it fails, try EF18. Acceptance and discount size depend on the campaign. Verify the final price and see our English coupon page (or the Arabic AF18/EF18 page) for the latest notes — we don’t invent store affiliate links beyond those coupon pages.
Should I buy an airport SIM instead?
Airport counters can work if you want a local number and don’t mind queues, ID checks and cash/card handling after a long flight. An eSIM you installed at home is usually faster for data-only needs. Compare queues, passport requirements and total cost for your trip length rather than assuming one option is always cheaper.
